How to: Install an internal SCSI CD-ROM drive.
Solution:
Backup files and remove the computer cover. Set the 'SCSI ID number on the new CD-ROM drive, install the drive in a bay and connect the cables. Turn on computer, install drivers, and restart the computer.
WARNING: Electrical shock hazard! Make sure the power is turned off and the external power cables have been disconnected before removing the computer cover.
CAUTION 1: This task should be performed by a qualified computer technician.
CAUTION 2: Please observe steps to reduce the potential damage to computer components from electrostatic discharge.
NOTE 1: Read the instruction manual that came with the CD-ROM drive to determine whether the interface card bus type (ISA, EISA, VLB or PCI local bus) is compatible with the host computer.
NOTE 2: Read the instruction manual that came with the CD-ROM drive to determine whether the interface card is Windows 95-compatible plug-and-play, or a legacy model, which is jumper selectable.
NOTE 3: Verify that the external SCSI connector, cable, and SCSI device connector are compatible. There are three SCSI standards: SCSI-1, SCSI-2 and SCSI-3. The three SCSI standards are compatible with each other (consult the CD-ROM drive user manual for performance data and exceptions) but the data interconnect cable connectors on the CD-ROM device and adapter card may NOT be compatible. There are three types of connectors: 50-pin Centronics, 25-pin DIN (Deutsche Industrie Norm), 50-pin high-density mini-DIN, and 68-pin high-density mini-DIN connectors. An adapter cable may be available to connect the device and adapter with different connectors. Consult the manufacturer for availability and compatibility.
1) Install the SCSI interface card:
a) Remove the computer cover.
b) Find a open slot of the same adapter bus type on the system board.
c) Remove the external slot cover for the corresponding open slot, by removing a screw at the top of the slot cover.
d) Perform one of the following depending on whether the adapter type is plug-and-play or jumper selectable:
1] For plug-and-play adapter cards:
a] Carefully insert the adapter card into the open slot.
b] Secure the adapter card using the screw removed in step 1)c).
2] For jumper-selectable adapter cards:
a] Select the interrupt, address, and DMA configuration using the jumpers (or switches) provided, according to the instructions in the CD-ROM drive user's manual.
b] Carefully insert the adapter card into the open slot.
c] Secure the adapter card using the screw removed in step 1)c).
d] Write down the jumper settings used, to aid in the driver installation.
e) Review steps 1)a) through 1)d)2]c] to verify they have all been followed correctly.
2) Install the CD-ROM drive:
a) Insert the CD-ROM drive unit into an empty 5.25 in bay, and secure the drive in the bay with four screws.
b) Connect the power cable to the drive unit.
c) Connect the internal SCSI CD-ROM device to the internal SCSI adapter connector using the 50 or 68 pin ribbon cable.
d) Select the correct 'SCSI ID' according to the instructions in the user manual.
e) To make sure the SCSI bus is properly terminated do one of the following:
1] If the CD-ROM drive is the only SCSI device using the SCSI adapter, do the following:
a] Add a terminating resistor pack to the CD-ROM.
NOTE: Refer to the CD-ROM drive user manual for instructions to properly terminate the drive.
b] Refer to the SCSI adapter card user manual for instructions to properly terminate the SCSI adapter.
2] If the CD-ROM is connected at the end of the SCSI ribbon cable, add a terminating resistor pack to the CD-ROM. Refer to the CD-ROM drive user manual for instructions to properly terminate the drive.
3] If the CD-ROM is not connected at the end of the ribbon cable, make sure the CD-ROM is not terminated.
NOTE: Refer to the CD-ROM drive user manual for instructions to unterminate the drive.
f) If there are both internal and external SCSI devices connected to the SCSI adapter, make sure the SCSI adapter is not terminated.
NOTE: Refer to the SCSI adapter card user's manual for instructions to unterminate the SCSI adapter.
g) Replace the computer cover.
h) Turn on the computer and check for an installation error.
NOTE: Typical installation errors are wrong jumper selections, loose connections or bad components. If the computer does not start normally, refer the problem to next-level support or a qualified computer technician.
3) Follow the manufacturer's instructions to install the CD-ROM driver.
